Belfast dissident republican activity: five men released after questioning
Five men arrested in Poleglass, west Belfast, under the Terrorism Act were released after questioning. The PSNI says searches and vehicle seizures took place, while the investigation remains ongoing.
Five men arrested in Poleglass, west Belfast, in connection with an investigation into violent dissident republican activity were subsequently released following questioning. BBC News reported the release, adding that the investigation remained ongoing.
Arrests in Poleglass under the Terrorism Act
According to the PSNI statement, officers from the Terrorism Investigation Unit arrested the men on Thursday evening, 21 May. They were aged 26, 27, 38, 44 and 51.
The arrests were made under the Terrorism Act. Police described the investigation as concerning violent dissident republican activity.
Questioning at Musgrave and searches elsewhere
The PSNI said the men were taken to the Serious Crime Suite at Musgrave Police Station in Belfast for questioning. Further searches were carried out in Belfast, Larne and Ballymena, and a number of vehicles were seized.
The police account did not specify the number or type of vehicles involved.
Release is a separate stage from the arrests
The sequence matters: arrest, questioning and release are separate stages, not a ramp towards an inevitable finding of guilt. Reading the initial arrest report alongside the follow-up avoids leaving the misleading impression that the five men were still being questioned.
The reported position after release was that the investigation remained ongoing. That update should not be read as a finding of guilt against any of the men.
