The South Belfast restaurant has reopened after a hotel refurbishment, with a new menu of pub classics and a £64 meal for two reviewed.

The Practitioner in South Belfast has recently reopened with a new menu following a major refurbishment of the adjoining Queen’s Hotel. Burgers, braised beef, pie and roast chicken feature at the restaurant, adding a pub-food option to Botanic’s dining scene.

A meal sampled by Belfast Live at an invited media opening would have cost £64 for two starters, two main courses and one dessert. Its reviewer considered that good value, praising the main courses but finding the portion of chips served with the burger too small.

What is on the menu?

The dishes tried included an Anam burger topped with beef braised in stout, cheddar and onion jam. The other main was haddock in beer batter, accompanied by peas, tartar sauce and thick-cut chips.

To start, the reviewer chose potato and leek soup served with Bakari bread, alongside crispy goat’s cheese paired with baked beets and honey. Chocolate pudding completed the meal.

Other choices include buffalo wings and soup, with sides ranging from onion rings in beer batter to herb-roasted potatoes.

A pub-food option for Botanic

A large central bar anchors the restaurant. Belfast Live’s reviewer described the setting as welcoming and the cooking as comforting pub food, particularly enjoying the goat’s cheese, the burger’s onion jam and the quality of the fish.

The review placed the reopening within Botanic’s established restaurant scene, known as ‘The Food Quarter’, arguing that the area had lacked somewhere serving good pub food. Its suggested improvement was a larger helping of chips with the burger, or a smaller serving bowl rather than leaving them spread across the plate.
