Strabane UK Town of Culture bid splits councillors after protest

Strabane’s bid to become UK Town of Culture has caused a row among councillors, after independent councillor Paul Gallagher called for a broader and fairer public consultation.

He raised the issue at a full meeting of Derry City and Strabane District Council. Some people had come to him asking how they could make their views heard if they opposed the bid, he said.

Protest in Strabane

His comments followed a weekend protest in Strabane. The demonstrators were people against the town’s application for the title.

Belfast Telegraph reports that the exchange left councillors at odds over how the bid is being handled.
